Rehoming cats & dogs for over 40 years
Pet Welfare was created in September 1982 so that military members needing to relinquish their pets had a safe place to leave them until we could find a home for them. Stray pets were also brought to Pet Welfare waiting to be adopted. At that time, we were giving cats and dogs away because we had so many to care for and we were just happy to find a home for all of them. We were a no-kill animal shelter open to the public working to help the military and the local community when they had to leave their pets behind. The dogs were kept in the abandoned Air Force K-9 dog kennels built in 1961 and the cats were kept in cages housed in the attached office.
Today, we charge a fee for adoptions to help defray the cost of maintaining a shelter for the pets. We cannot take in strays in keeping with Florida law and Eglin AFB Regulations. However, our focus still remains in providing a no-kill animal shelter to military members and the local community needing to relinquish their pets. We continue to provide this service with an all-volunteer force and we receive no financial support from the military or the Department of Defense.
We are always in need of volunteers and foster homes and depend solely on donations, grants, adoptions fees, and fundraisers for our financial needs. We love and care for animals in need and on those days when we feel we’re the only ones caring or can barely think straight because we’re so tired, we pick ourselves up and look around and remember what we do it for...the animals that need us.
